Excellent week! De-installed the show last friday, met some interesting people in the gallery and had the pleasure of meeting Alan Lamb (he makes music with telegraph wires), who came to my artist talk with Ros Bandt. Very much the artstar contingent of australian aeolian sound practice.

Helped out at the lollystall for the Bridal Fair with Kim, that was hilarious. Chicks with rocks everywhere, watched one of the bridal fashion shows, wondered at the insanity of the whole enterprise. I'm not one of those people who has been planning the 'big day' forever - my only wedding fantasy involves being surrounded by beautiful islander men on a south pacific beach, garlanded with flowers and handed drinks in coconuts. People tell me this isn't actually a wedding fantasy - note the lack of detail re: groom (he will be barefoot and dance all night is my only stipulation) but hey, it's the only one I've got.

Running off now to opening at Gertrude St which I hope will involve Campari, but before I go must share my very excellent news - will be moving to Sydney for 6 months next year as the Artist in Residence at ABC Radio with The Listening Room. Very exciting!!!! Now I feel like a real artist - first all those plinths and now a grant! Yay!!!

Another day in the gallery. Walked up this morning from home, all fresh and crisp in the morning air. Lots more stencil art on the walls in fitzroy, and lots more engineers visiting the exhibition after I sent out emails targeting the architecture, music and engineering departments. Agatha wrote a lovely review which you can read below.
Giving my artists talk today - it's been good practice sitting the gallery and doing all those interviews, I have a fairly good idea of what people are interested in.

Lachie and Gus came by yesterday and wrote excellent comments in the book
"I think that if you decided to dedicate your existence to seeking these sounds, it would be a life worth living, and a dedication worth lending one's ear to. You go girl!" and
"keep rockin those ropes.... and pullin them strings... to keep the world keen to hear these types of things"
Although I wonder does that imply that if I don't dedicate my life to this it's not worth living!? No, joking, all life is intrinsically valuable.

SINGING BRIDGES

Sound Installation by Jodi Rose

Article by Agatha Yim

"Singing Bridges" is the latest sound exhibition by Jodi Rose; a conceptual sound artist who is currently completing a Master of Media Art at the School of Creative Arts. The sound exhibition features recorded sounds of bridges from around the world which aims to give the listener an intimate alter perspective of sounds that we would otherwise take for granted.

"To me art is about experiencing the world differently and being able to find something unique or beautiful that isn't necessarily obvious. And actually being able to express that so that other people can have a sense of it as well is very important. So [with] doing something like recording Bridges which is obviously something quite off the wall... I hope to give people a sense of something else in their everyday environment so that next time [when] they cross a bridge they'll think 'oh I wonder what this one sounds like?' or perhaps just have a little bit of reflective poetic moment in [their] everyday life...I think it's really important that art is part of the day to day world."

The idea originated from a mere spark of curiosity during her time at Sydney College of the Arts when she came upon the harp-like construction of the newly built Glebe Island Bridge, "I walked past one day and went, 'wow, I wonder what the cables sound like?'"

Fuelled by her great curiosity Jodi spent 7 months of last year recording material all around the world, from places such as Vietnam, London, The Netherlands, and Slovakia, just to name a few. 'I wanted to explore the world with this project, to me it was a way of going out and being able to make connections with the world in a different way.'

"Singing Bridges" is on show until this Friday and is located in the George Paton Gallery (2nd Floor of Union House), University of Melbourne.

Check out the installation here: (after Friday you may need to go to the archive page)

George Paton Gallery
Minding the show for discovery day - hundreds of bright-eyed potential melbourne uni students wandering through with a cursory glance at the walls.
I'm having that sense of anti-climax, when you've put lots of work and energy into something, been completely focused on it and then once everything is done, you're like, ok what now? Talking to a friend at a party last night, who said, yes, you expect accolades, the world to be laid at your feet.... and nothing changes. Rose Byrne in an interview said the same thing, it's very hard adjusting to regular life again - not that I'm every gonna be a movie star or anything. Very painful having photos taken for various publications, which may or may not every run their stories. I did turn up in the fine herlad-sun publication mx this week, in a decidely unflattering photo. Oh well, time for some transformation. On to the next phase of the project, getting the CD together and finishing my thesis. Yes, that old thing!
The opening night was fun, lots of people and champagne, with unexpected appearances from old friends and associates, like the gorgeous kimba and ryan, and a lovely girl I met in a clothes shop on brunswick st after installing the work on sunday, while philippa and I waited for our take-away from the veggie bar. Didn't even have too bad a hangover, although people kept bringing me glasses of champagne. Woke up early and full of energy the next morning and walked up to smith st for breakfast supplies, found the best stencil wall in fitzroy - as the guy from a cafe who had a really cool muscular sleek seal-like dog informed me. Lovely short story about a cat, and this 'we are each here to fill our own small silence with dancing." very inspiring, I love street art. Hope to make something unexpected for people to stumble onto where you can hear the sound of the cables while walking across, preferably in spain on one of santiago calatrava's bridges.

Exhibition mostly installed in George Paton Gallery. It looks gorgeous - strange having only seen all these bits and pieces on the kitchen table, and in folders and piles - to have them all up on the gallery wall gives a completely different experience. I had incredible installation consultants helping me set up, lucky really as when it came to my method for suspending a globe, well, let's just say you can really tell I'm a conceptual artist :) Philippa thought it was hilarious, a piece of performance art, and Kim the wonderful sculptor extraordinaire eventually said, after watching me for 7 or 8 minutes: here give me that, and very efficiently deconstructed what I'd done and made it work, simple and elegant in about 2 minutes flat. Finishing off the final sound tweaking, some of the remixes (the ones I've got so far) are gorgeous, I think it's going to be really exciting for people to see and hear. Better go now, finish installing today, then I'll be kicking back in the gallery, knitting and chatting to anyone who comes in.

morning.
the creative sprite living inside my head seems to have sucked up
enough energy now and tipped me over into complete obsession...
Indeed it is a state close to pathological, but luckily I have nothing else
to do except compose, edit and play with bridge sounds.

come along to see and hear the results:
