The fame star is shining brightly tonight.
1. Had a call from Ben saying, you're in the paper - and there I was, in Syd Morning Herald SPIKE column. Enjoyed the question he posed:
Over the top
Sometimes those creative types take things a bit too far. Fascinated with the sounds created by bridge structures, Australian sound artist Jodi Rose travels the world listening to and recording the "music" of suspension and cable bridges.
Jodi's compositions create a global symphony of bridges and are being released on a CD called Lover's Leap for Valentine's Day.
Her musical journey began with her recording of the Glebe Island Bridge in 1994.
In 2002 she embarked on a "spiritual odyssey" to discover the secret music of concrete. Rose listened to and recorded the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges in the US; Matinkaari Bridge, Helsinki; Millennium Bridge, London; My Thuan Bridge, Mekong Delta, Vietnam (her favourite); and Novy Most Bridge, Bratislava, Slovakia.
"Bridges are like giant harps played by the wind. Tuning in to the cables you can hear a secret language, which I believe is the voice of the bridge," she explains.
Spike is interested in what the future holds for Rose. Perhaps a symphony based on the sound of car alarms? Or a percussion work based on the sound of tiles falling off the Opera House?"
...and wrote back to say I was very intrigued by the idea and contemplating an endurance performance based on waiting for the tiles to fall. Also pointed out the CD is called: Singing Bridges Vibrations : Variations - the phrase 'lovers leap' was a bad valentines day pun. Although I've already had an email from someone wanting to buy the CD, evidently the new name is working!
2. Lisa called to say the episode of Neighbours where my project is mentioned was on air tonight.
Sky gets a letter from friend overseas, who talks about being involved with this really cool art project, with a girl who records the sound of bridges. Sadly a few other characters were talking over the top of it - but hey, I read in the Age only a month or so ago that once you really know you've made it when you (or your subculture) gets onto neighbours. So there I am.
3. Media artist gallery opening crawl tonight, started at Rosyln Oxley with the Japanese dot lady (can't remember her name but the dot paintings were $75,000) and had my photo taken by a roving photographer while talking to Kathy Cleland. You never know, may make it into the Sunday social pages yet. That would be two sound artists in the past month - could be some kind of record.
better go now and get some beauty sleep, photographer from the courier is coming in the morning. and hopefully 500 CD's will also arrive on my doorstep. Got the covers yesterday - oh my god they are sooooo beautiful. Now just need to sort out distribution - mysterious missing CD hope will arrive soon at my first choice and we can make a deal.
