a little something from melbourne
flying visit to see friends, my supervisor and accountant - parts of my life continue in other cities without me there. maybe an argument for cloning?
had the usual delirious and excellent rant with justin, who quoted shakespeare to me when I told him the world was spinning - yes, it is, he agreed. just what you need on sunday morning, literal and abstruse philosophy. told me about a sound performance he witnessed in a dingy sports centre outside paris, where a high school band were made to continue playing the first two bars of the french national anthem over and over and over again, while two professional opera singers repeated the same lines. the composer was up the back, ordering them to continue, until the performers physically broke down. the audience went through a series of emotional responses, from boredom, to anger and outrage, at times clapping to try and make it stop, or shouting out abuse - this is terrible - but still the band played on. it lasted for almost two hours - endurance art.
other friends saw the backtoback show at melbourne festival, which I missed as a. everything was booked out and b. I got sick and spent most of the time on Emer's couch, receiving visitors now and then. The performance was on the concourse of Flinders St station, and the audience listened through headphones, first watching the people walking by for around ten minutes, then starting to hear dialogue but not knowing who the actors were.... it was about a drug deal, with the yuppie purchaser just wanting to get out of there, while the dealer had an existential crisis and couldn't go through with the sale until this was resolved. ther performers were amazing, and left my friend with a smile from her belly up. so there's some vicarious art experience.
also met up with billy wilson and trillion (jody) who are touring australia doing their unique brand of weird-ass nz hip-hop, thursday at the espy in st kilda, friday at the hopetoun in sydney. check em out. http://www.trillion.co.nz/
