Just back from doing a kick-ass noise set at the post museum. The kids loved it, and I had a great time. Something about the silent singapore bridges, made me gather all the sounds I could find and really rock them into some heavy metal hardcore noise. Kelly said she heard people talking afterwards about how much they liked the set - random eavesdropping on strangers, I love it. A few friends thought it was way too loud "You noisy bitch' said one, and I might have had that response an audience member, but man! it was fun to play like that.
The other acts were great, first one, Mark played a kazoo like I've never heard it played before, the second was a lovely hypnotic electronica/beats set, quite minimalist, with some gorgeous textures, and the third were a fabulous post-rock band, who covered a trashy 80's pop song I've forgotten now, but enjoyed at the time. Really nice crowd, very friendly and relaxed, and great venue, where the ISEA club nights will be on 25th and 26th July.
Still have the very fabulous moogerfooger filter and kaoss pad courtesy of sonicbrat, will noodle around on them a bit more today before returning.
Hilarious, I am the most last-minute person ever, literally working out how to plug in the various cables before I left the house at 6, after a four hour session sampling, most of which i didn't use. The stuff I recorded from latest bridge trip had this crazy noise all over it, which I was really getting into, and didn't remember being there when I made the recording, so kept going until the end, as there was a nice intriguing devloping soundscape inside the endurance test of the high frequency chaos. Lo and behold, when I stopped it and started again, all that extra grit was gone - so glad I captured it, taking the musique concrete punk attitude to my bridges these days, whatever sounds I capture, or find strangely attached to the original, are all part of the work.
Nice thinking through the pieces for the installation too, something about being lost in transmission, signal:noise and interference is really interesting to me at the moment.
Finished the texts, and logo for bridge fm stickers last night. Had a visit to my punk friend (no. 3, no. 1 is the person responsible for passing my name on to Rizal, who organised the gig tonight - respect!)
enjoyed being in a cosy home atmosphere.
Woke up to two invitations for work in various exhibitions the other day; one of them already taking place at carriageworks this weekend, as part of public space lab; and the second very nice online sound archive, excited to be part of.
My final bridge trip yielded some interesting sound patterns, although still not really 'singing' the way I like to hear a bridge. Had a beautiful evening making abstract and romantic performance art on another bridge, and very wonderful artists both performing and filming - thank you all!
Think that's all for now, nice to end the week on a high note, after dreading this performance so much. I wonder why I ever agree to do them, but then it's a great way to kick-start my composition for the work, and I enjoy exploring different process and forms to create the live performance with. Still not completely satisfied though, until I get my bridge instrument. One incarnation currently on display at liquid architecture in Sydney - yay Nick, thank you!
Apparently there's a grindcore gig tomorrow near bugis - am loving my new local connections. Good to get out and mingle, mix it up, most of the other isea artists came along too, and met various people there. Post cafe has fantastic vegeterian food yum.
